Having a Healthy Stoma
Sometimes, you do have a healthy condition after having surgery. When you have a healthy stoma, you do not have to suffer much. However, if you do not know about the stoma health, you may bump into some serious problems. For that, you should know whether your stoma is healthy or not. If your stoma is not healthy, you should do some extra care for your stoma and diet routine. But, if your stoma is healthy, you can easily pass your stoma days.

Here are Some Signs of a Healthy Stoma
After having a stoma, it will get swollen for a few months or weeks. After some weeks or months, it will automatically get shrink. If you feel after some months that your stoma swelling is not getting down, then there is a problem with the stoma health.

The stoma does not have a specific shape or size. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the size and shape of the stoma.

However, a healthy stoma is pink or red. Moreover, after a few weeks, your stoma becomes slightly moist. A healthy stoma is painless after a few weeks of operation.

When you wash your stoma or rub it, it will quickly bleed for a few minutes. The bleeding is normal; however, if the bleeding continues, then your stoma is having a serious issue.

Stoma Drainage
Your stoma pouch should not leak. The output should empty into the stoma bag. The output should not leak from the stoma pouch. If you have a urostomy surgery, and the urine in the stoma bag is bloody, you need to consult your doctor then. 

Loop Ostomy – Temporary Stoma
If you have a temporary stoma, there will be a supporting rod or bridge in the stoma. After a few weeks, the doctor will remove the double-barrel from the stoma. If you forget to remove the rod, it will create a problem for you. Thus, make sure that your doctor will remove the stoma bridge after some days.

Peristomal Skin
The peristomal skin should be clean, odorless, and healthy. If the peristomal skin is red, irritated, or rashes, then your skin around the stoma is in the problem. The peristomal skin should be like normal skin. It should not get discolored. The color of the peristomal skin should be like the skin anywhere else on your body. Moreover, your stoma bag should not leak. If the stoma pouch leaks continuously, it will create problems for your stoma and skin health. It will make your skin irritated and discolor. 

Types of Stoma Pouches
Every ostomy is different; thus, the kind of every pouch is different. Here are some recommended types of stoma pouches according to the kinds of ostomy surgery

  • Ileostomy will need a drainable pouch
  • Urostomy will need a urostomy pouch
  • Colostomy will need a drainable or closed pouch
